When: 6-10 p.m., April 4. Show stays up until April 30.
Where: Alias Gallery, 1043 Virginia Ave.
Cost: Free event; “PEEL: The Art of the Sticker” books are $33.

PEEL Magazine launches new sticker-art book
Located in the Murphy Art Center in Fountain Square, Peel Magazine and its gallery, Alias, are celebrating the release of “PEEL: The Art of the Sticker,” a book chronicling PEEL’s innovative coverage of street art. The April 4 event includes both a book signing with authors Dave and Holly Combs and the opening of “Sold Out,” a show featuring work by 30 artists included in the book.
Artists in the show come from
all over the world. They include: Shepard Fairey (Obey Giant), Seen,
Buff Monster, Klutch, DAVe Warnke, MCA / Evil Design, Abe Linclon Jr.,
Dolla', Foob, Capish, 14 Bolt, Mildred, Miss Venus, BilliKid, Sesper,
C. Damage, Evoker, Mathew Curran, Coallus, Zoltron, NiceBunny, Stomach,
Mad One, me love, 20mg, This is Process, Cherrycore, and Magmo.
PEEL got its start after Dave
and Holly Combs traveled to New York City to assist with Sept. 11 recovery
efforts. While exploring Manhattan during their off hours, they were
inspired by the wealth of stickers they saw all over the city. In the
years since, PEEL evolved from a black and white zine stuffed into plastic
bags to a full-size, glossy, internationally distributed magazine. Their
new book documents the development of both PEEL and the sticker culture.
“We’re helping add yet another tool to an artist's arsenal in the form of the sticker,” Dave Combs said. “PEEL Magazine and our new book work to showcase sticker art’s social and aesthetic power.”
MAGMO recently collaborated with True Love Collective (MA) on a fresh 3 deck triptych featuring some of the Earth's most amazing animals that are considered endangered or a threatened species. The TLCxMagmo Endangered skatedecks are made here in the USA using non-toxin biodegradable glues, sustainably harvested maple, and screen printed with environmentally friendly inks. Made with love and destroy for skaters by skaters.
The skatedecks come in three different sizes and when side by side create an awesome triptych collage of wild creatures; Asian Sheepshead Wrasse, Golden Lion Tamarin, Visayan Warty Pig, Bastard Quiver Tree, Giant Panda
(cont.) Black Flying Fox (Fruit Bat), Dugong (Sea Cow), Sumatran Rhinoceros, and Cyclades Blunt-Nosed Viper.
Don't just SKATE'em - SAVE'em!
The Magmo skateboard illustrations are based on a variety of real life plants and
animals that are unfortunately on the verge of extinction. These are
just a few of the Earth's amazing creatures that need your help to
survive. Visit the links below to learn more about the animals
featured on the decks along with information on how you can help save
them.

Magmo The Destroyer's "BAD AUTO" was selected to be part of the Hera Gallery's Car Culture Show, a national juried exhibition June 3 – July 8, 2006 Opening reception Saturday, June 3rd 6-8pm. Gallery Talk June 25th, 2-4pm

Hera Gallery presents "Car Culture", a national juried exhibition from June 3 through July 8, 2006. An opening reception will be held from 6 – 8 pm, Saturday, June 3. A gallery talk given by three of the participating artists will be held on Sunday, June 25 from 2 -4 pm. With works selected by juror Bart Parker, noted photographer and Professor Emeritus at the University of Rhode Island, the exhibition examines the relationship of women, men and society to the car - as aesthetic object, cultural icon, gas guzzler and political tool.
"Car Culture" showcases work from 26 artists living in 11 states, including some artists as local as Narragansett, with others working from New Hampshire to Oregon. Each individual piece represents not only a unique perspective on the car, but a personalized use of the media. Photography is a popular choice in the exhibition, with 9 artists working in black and white, color, digital and photo collage. Though the choice of medium is a constant among this group of artists, the images, themes and concepts have little in common.
In recent months, Americans have been forced to examine a part of their lives, for many as essential as food and shelter: the car. With the steep rise in the price of gasoline, and the predictions for a steady increase, the car's role as the dominant mode of transportation is a serious concern for the entire country. No fundamental change in American driving habits has become mainstream, nor has a single attitude towards the car come to represent a collective American opinion. Some Americans view cars as a necessary evil, and some see them as an earned luxury. The works in "Car Culture" reflect this as well. For artists across the country there exist ideologically and socially diverse opinions toward the car. Some images depict a form of worship, as others become a form of worship themselves. Other images are steadfast in their illustration of an unhealthy relationship between Americans and the car; while many others attempt to navigate the complexities of living entrenched in American car culture.
Though the sounds of protest can be heard on Main Street in Wakefield, there are a number of quiet homages to the car as an American icon. The common link between these pieces is that the car of worship, is the car of the past. Whether it is a hot rod, gleaming red, poised in the vast openness of the American landscape, or a collection of vintage autos captured in the loving detail of black and white photography, these pieces are memorials to an American past. This is a past some artists clearly pay their respects to, while others see it as having paved the road for today's "Car Culture".
These programs are presented with partial support from The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, Hera Educational Foundation, and The Friends of Hera. Hera Gallery is free and open to the public and is accessible to persons with disabilities. Parking is available.

MAGMO + Lo Directo Skateboard's Artist Series
Magmo was invited by Lo Directo Skate boards to be the first guest
artist in their new series of limited edition artist skate decks.
Magmo (R.I.) was very excited to work with the emerging new skate deck company Lo Directo (Seattle, WA) to develop a design for their first artist deck series. The final deck design titled "BREATH+DESTROY" pays homage to the days when the bottoms of skate decks where scrawled with the some of the most creative, twisted and inspiring graphics of their time. The concept behind the design was quite simple, no matter what challenge you face just take a deep breath and go for it. Magmo, who had grown up on the east coast, had been inspired to create "BREATH+DESTROY" from one of his childhood pastimes. "We lived in a small town right on the ocean, there where also ponds and quarries. We would spend all day jumping from cliffs, bridges, and trees into them. At that time I would tell you I wasn't scared, but looking back, I think no matter how scared I was I would just take a deep breath and jump." The deck illustration is based on a supernatural Magmo energy spirit that everyone has inside them, "With a lot of heart and positive energy there no telling what you could achieve, people just have to find it inside themselves. I think skaters/athletes can relate. They are constantly challenged by obstacles and no matter how high the jump or difficult the trick or numerous times of hitting the ground, they get up and take a deep breath and try again, it's awesome." Magmo was also excited to be involved in designing the skate deck for his own environmental reasons, "Anything that is an alternative to a gas powered machines to get around town is great to me. I really hate driving, when I drive I see traffic and traffic makes pollution and that makes people unhappy. I would much rather destroy all the cars and see everyone riding a skateboard." Clean air, healthy spirits, Breath+Destroy!
High-res photos are available for print. Send all image requests via email to: magmothedestroyer@gmail(dot)com

happy. He is an accomplished illustrator, having appeared in
everything from Time Magazine to Ranger Rick, Nickelodeon Magazine to
Applied Arts. His unique approach to illustration and animation makes
him a favorite for droves of art directors, but where Slack is at his

Zoltron
is an enigma. A self proclaimed 70's teen idol, Zoltron's wave hairdo
and unique California accent epitomized a certain level of cool, which
inevitable paved the way to his success as the first leader of the
west coast (all-moped) unit of the Hell's Angels, known as the "Rebel
Brigade." A serious gambling habit ended Zoltron's cycling career. It
was then that he picked up the art of sticker slapping, which includes
his now globally renowned street technique of cutting the sticker's
corners with a razor blade, so that people can't easily tear down his
vinyl. Also famous for putting up a sticker and singeing the vinyl
with a lighter to insure an instant cure, Zoltron, in his own mind,
has single handedly revolutionized sticker slapping techniques, world
wide.
